When Todd and I first got married I always talked about knocking down the walls in the end of the kitchen leading into the laundry room at that time. I also talked about creating a laundry room and completely moving it elsewhere which we did here and quite honestly after we had that void I knew we NEEDED a pantry!! Finally, after a few months, a few close calls, some tears, lots of sweat and many lost weekends we went from closed off cramped kitchen with a TINY pantry to opened up kitchen with tons of storage AND a custom pantry! I couldn’t be more excited and though our next phase is cabinets and granite I’m totally okay with waiting and saving until it’s feasible! It only took my husband 3 years to agree to this…probably because arguing with a pregnant wife is more dangerous than with a terrorist!
Here’s a BEFORE, like WAY before…
Our ceiling needs to be painted and yes the kitchen was a mess...
For months our kitchen sat while we were working on the laundry room (well the Todd and Ryan were, I was working on being pregnant).
And then the goodness started…our walls started coming down!
We did have a little flooring problem…word of advice, if you’re going to buy discontinued flooring make sure and buy at least two extra boxes! We only had 4 pieces so there was a lot of stressing out when we took the wall out and had to figure out how to patch our floor! That weekend we went from walls to open goodness…
Notice how there are 4 light switches to the right of the door and then that random cord coming from the ceiling? Too many switches...
I seriously can’t even begin to tell you what a HUGE difference there is! Pictures don’t do it justice! It’s soo much brighter in our kitchen and no longer feels small at all, so crazy to be honest!
From here the guys capped off the water, took care of the electrical and got the framing taken care of.
Haha! Todd was REALLY excited about how strong it was!
The drywall and mud came in next…
Now only 3 switches!
You can see what we had as a pantry before hand…18 inches of {not so} goodness!
The guys busted out a ton of work for a solid week, every night they worked on the pantry before the party so that we could at least make it look like there was something behind there and well wanted to make sure that the doors were in so we could close them.
The doors are going to be painted and we will be replacing the door to the outside eventually.
Then came the shelving unit. Let me be honest…I was kinda bummed when I found out that there would have to be legs at the bottom. I loved the look of pantries that were legless and had tons of room for drinks and what not, especially since Todd drinks insane amounts of soda!
The two of them figured out a way to surprise me and make our pantry floating and I couldn’t be more excited, 6 ft of pantry goodness!! And this is how it sat for a few weeks. I was terrified to put anything in it, it was too lovely all by itself! But this weekend it was time to suck it up and get it moved over (especially since we literally didn’t do anything else house related all weekend).
I couldn’t be more happy!
We are trying to find the same hardware as the rest of the house in dummy handles...
Our ice cream maker is going on the bottom left.
Originally we had plans to do something like this with out baking sheets and cutting boards…
But we realized that though we have more storage space it wasn’t very practical to use up one whole shelf for just baking sheets and what not. Oh! Of course my obsession with boxes (especially of the blue descent) helped keep things organized as well!
We couldn’t be more excited! Obviously there is more left to do like install the lighting fixture above the door, paint the doors and add handles but those are little bits that can be done as we figure things out! You can see that there is more to be added to our pantry but being that I’m not much of a cooker, (I can, I just don’t) so there isn’t much need for a bunch of stuff. We plan on adding a third shelf in the middle there and using those (or some) shelves for Tenleys bottles, food and Tupperware since we don’t have a ton of space in the cabinets. I LOVE that the shelves are adjustable too!!
So we went from this small, messy and funky yellow kitchen…
To this…
