Pinterest Challenge DIY String Art

I jumped at the chance to tackle the newest Pinterest Challenge. It seems like forever ago, January to be exact, I was talking about big plans to make string art. What originally inspired me was this wedding sign while I was (not so) secretly pinning away for my sister’s wedding, fyi…she’s not even engaged yet!

But what really got me fired up was this etsy sign, granted I clearly don’t know scale because in my mind I saw this and saw HUGE and fabulous not 16″x11″!

As I was throwing ideas around with my fav blogger and dear (never really met) friend Cait and she said she loved the idea. Well then life (aka Tenley) happened and as embarrassing as this is to admit, I started seeing a ton of other string art projects and it totally bummed me out. My copy cat idea was now one of a million as opposed to one of a few and I really didn’t want to sacrifice my time for something I had lost my excitement for…till the challenge came up and I couldn’t not do it, plus I had already started it! I stained the wood and had the California map already printed at Staples. Thanks to yet another Pinterest pin, the ability to get a HUGE picture printed as an “engineer” print for dirt cheap, as in less than $5! After figuring out where I wanted California to be in relation to the board we got to nailing along the outline, surprisingly it took less than an hour. When I started Todd informed me there would be no way we’d get it done today, Tenley only allows so much in this house, especially since an hour a day in naps is deemed amazing!

Obviously then you’ll remove the paper from the board, be forewarned…you will most likely need tweezers to get the tiny pieces out! Honestly, it was the stringing that was gnarly! We intended to fill it completely but the string that was available (after 2 stops) was super thin and I think I would have lost my mind or my fingers had I tried to go that route!

She napped for a whole 40 minutes so we took advantage and started stringing it up!

After several days of a few stolen hours here and there we deemed it complete and regardless of its imperfections (bowed wood), splinters, raw fingers and hours spent wrapping a tiny string around a slightly larger nail we’re finished and it’s up using a french cleat!!

We REALLY need to get some color in there! We have a long way to go before the living room and house is how we’d like it, I’m sure by then we will be ready to rent the house out and move to our next house but eh!! Todd says it’s too big and wants it to go onto artsy fartsy (etsy)…he’s just grumpy that he didn’t come up with it but who knows! I have to say it was seriously a blast but I was a bit crazy tackling a 4×3 print!!!

Diana Maria - Founds this from YHL and LOVE IT! Totally inspired! Question (and sorry if it’s silly!): how did you get it to hang on the wall, what did you attach to the back? (I’m guessing it’s heavy) Thanks!July 10, 2012 – 10:37 am

Oh my goodness!! I’m so lame! I can’t believe I left it out! We used a french cleat! Its the way to go when hanging heavy objects, especially flush to the wall! Home Depot is really the best option to find a decent selection of them (all 3 or 4) and that’s coming from a Lowes girl! :) thank you for your kind words!! I will have to mosey over to your blog after work!!

Hilary - OK, loving this. What a great idea. I was just drooling over some string art with a friend of mine at work the other day and thinking that it was something that I might want to try. I’m definitely pinning this and will maybe give it a shot in the coming months. Awesome!July 10, 2012 – 11:22 am

Ashley - This is awesome! Maryland would probably be a much harder state to nail down (ha, ha) because of the nooks and crannies, but you make it look so easy! Definitely one of my future projects.July 10, 2012 – 3:23 pm

Thank you so much Ashley!! It wasn’t easy and as much as I’m aware there is a bay in SF, it sure is hard to make sure and string it correctly! It was pretty easy though! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

michelle@decorandthedog - So I was with you on the string art…….eh, kind of over it because everyone was doing it. But I’m MADLY in love with the size of this. You should give the kid benadryl so you can get more cool projects done. ;) July 10, 2012 – 7:33 pm

Thank you so much Ann!! I apologize on the delay response! Life is a bit hectic with the flu and a teething infant! I love the idea of doing that for your daughter! I’m sure they’d love it, especially while they’re moving around!

Three Chicks & One Egg - This is a fabulous project! I’ve been thinking about doing string art with my girls as part of our upcoming homeschool year and this has definitely given me the inspiration to do so! I had no idea that string art was making a comeback so this is quite exciting. I remember doing it in elementary school, but couldn’t remember how exactly to do it so your tutorial will be a great help!

Thanks!

Brittany @ Crafty Mischief - This is awesome! I can’t wait to give it a try…although Utah wouldn’t be nearly as hard to make. Lol! Thanks so much for sharing! :) July 16, 2012 – 11:18 pm

Thank you so much Brittany! I apologize on the delay response, life is a bit hectic with the flu and a teething infant! Hahaha! No, Utah would probably be quite a bit easier! Honestly we spaced out quite a bit when we were on straight lines and hammered nails in closer where the details were, as helpful as it was those close nails were still a pain in the butt to wrap later!

Just Jaime - I felt the same way: I’d seen too much of it. But now I’m renewed in my interest! Awesome job!July 19, 2012 – 7:19 pm

Thank you so much Jess!! I apologize on the delay response, life is a bit hectic with the flu and a teething infant! I say do it! It’s a fairly easy project, especially if you have the time to kind of just mindlessly string nails while watching some trash tv, not that I did that or anything…
